No more whining over red wine stains

I carry my toothbrush on dates. It's not because I have poor dental hygiene, or that I'm a clean freak.

I carry my toothbrush around because I want to be ready to fight red teeth, in case my date orders red wine.

After watching a promotional video for the latest US import to Australia, Wine Wipes, I realised that I am not the only one who fears red wine during dates.

In the company's promo, a couple is seen going on a romantic picnic on a hot summer day. Everything is going well until the girl drinks a glass of red wine. When she opens here mouth to say "I love you", she exposes her red, wine stained teeth, the only part of the video that is in colour, and her date freaks out and runs away.

The screen fades and "For the moments you want to hold on to..." is displayed.

Then I realised I couldn't take my toothbrush to a picnic, and started to worry again. But in terms of effective advertising, the ad worked on me because I'll certainly be carrying Wine Wipes around.

The new product that has arrived to Australia might come handy one day.

Made by US company Borracha - cheekily named for the Spanish word for "drunk" - Wine Wipes come in a 20-wipe compact which has a mirror and is meant to safely remove the red wine stains from your teeth and mouth without interfering with the taste of your wine, or your teeth.

As for the mirror, perhaps you are better off rushing to the bathroom and using your wipes there because your date might be disgusted to see you rubbing your teeth and mouth with wipes in front of them.

Be creative.

You've had your food, you've drank your wine. Pull out your mirror and pretend you are checking to see if you have got any food stuck in your teeth. If your teeth are red, pretend you've got food stuck between your teeth and make your excuse to go to the loo.

Deodorant? Check. Make up still in tact? Check. Hair looking good? Check. White teeth? Check. One less thing to worry about. Red wine stain on your white dress? Check. Maybe they can now focus on creating Wine Wipes for fabric?

But are there any potential risks in using these wipes?

The wipes contains ingredients such as baking soda and salt, the same formula used to brush teeth before the modern day toothpaste. These two ingredients do help make your teeth white however, in recent dental studies, it is recommended to use baking soda and salt to whiten your teeth once every two weeks because baking soda is quite abrasive and can damage tooth enamel if used too often. It can also dissolve orthodontic glue and it not recommended for use on people with permanent retainer or wear braces.

But then, you wouldn't be using the wipes every day... Would you?
