Muffin tops and moobs taking over the nation

Know the meaning of a muffin top? Heard the word moob before?

New research has revealed nearly three quarters of Australian women (71 per cent) admitted to having a muffin top (flesh overhanging the waist) with 42 per cent of Aussie men confessing to having moobs (man boobs).

The research, conducted by SumoSalad, asked 1000 men and women to reveal all about their eating habits, increasing waistlines and wobbly bits as part of their drive for a fitter, healthier nation. With the results now in, SumoSalad says it really is time for people to take a good look at their health and wellbeing.

More about muffin tops

The tell-tale signs of a muffin top are most likely to show in a woman’s 20s with nearly a third (28 per cent) of women confessing to first developing one between the ages of 20-29.

ACT residents topped the muffin top charts (82 per cent) while women in Western Australia were least likely to have one, however a hefty 63 per cent still admitted to bulges over their jeans.

Nationally, those working in hospitality and tourism were the biggest muffin top holders (85 per cent), closely followed by secretaries (83 per cent)

Show us your moobs.

Around four in 10 men (42 per cent) admitted to having moobs with the majority (43 per cent) developing them in their teens.

Truckers and van drivers were the most likely culprits (59 per cent) – with junk food probably playing a part on long journeys - closely followed by marketing and media types (57 per cent).

Meanwhile, Western Australians had the biggest percentage of men with moobs (59 per cent), with muscle-bound men in NSW and the ACT having the lowest percentage (39 per cent and 27 per cent respectively)

The independent research formed part of SumoSalad’s "Quit" campaign that aims to not only raise a few laughs, but also to highlight the serious issue of Aussies and their increased waistlines.

SumoSalad MD, Luke Baylis, said: “We want to get Aussies to face the facts - you don’t have to be obese to be unhealthy, and muffin tops, moobs and cankles (swollen ankles which blend into the calf), are all tell-tale signs of not eating a balanced diet. With recent government statistics showing that 62 per cent of Australians are now classified as overweight, we’re determined to help do something about it by taking a more humorous approach to the issue through our new campaign."

Despite these body burdens being so common, the research revealed that moobs, muffin tops and cankles aren’t something Aussies are fans of: 81 per cent of females said they hated muffin tops and even shyed away from wearing certain clothes because of them.

Muffin tops and moobs are a big turn off for 72 per cent and 75 per cent of the nation respectively

According to the study, women (73 per cent) led the pack in trying to exercise their muffin tops away with minimal results, whilst only 52 per cent of men had tried exercising to minimise their moobs.

SumoSalad is hoping its new "Quit" campaign will spur people into action to move their moobs, muffin tops and cankles and get healthy. The campaign kicks off with a series of tongue in cheek television advertisements that play off the successful government anti-smoking "Quit" campaign. In line with the "every cigarette is doing you damage" message, cigarettes are replaced with chips, burgers and greasy chicken now being the nasties, in an attempt to provoke people to ponder if they could actually be victims to excess fat in unwanted areas.
