A couple of weeks ago, a friend invited me to dinner at Kobe Jones at Sydney's King Street Wharf.
Little did I know that it would be one of the most expensive meals I've ever had, costing over $700 because we had ordered Wagyu beef.
I couldn't stop thinking about how expensive the Wagyu beef had been and wondered what other foods out there people pay ridiculous amounts of money for.
I was shocked.
Saffron, a spice that is available in most supermarkets, and that I try to avoid due to its expensiveness, is one of the most expensive spices in the world, going for $500 to $5000 per pound (0.45kg). The reason why it costs so much is because it requires 50,000 to 75,000 flowers to make, not to mention the countless hours of labour.
The most expensive nut in the world was Australia's native macadamia nut. Macadamia trees produce nuts after they are seven to 10 years old, requiring heavy rainfall and fertile soil. A kilogram of macadamia nuts sells at just over $30.
Caviar has always been associated with wealth so it was not a surprise to find out that the most expensive caviar in the world costs more than $5000 per kilogram. The almas caviar comes from 100 year old fish from a species that hasn't changed for 120 million years.
The most expensive mushroom, the white truffle, cost $2000 - $4000 per kilogram. In 2007, Stanley Ho, the owner of the Macau casino paid an astonishing $330,000 for 1.5kg of truffles.
The French La Bonnotte potato, found to be the most expensive potato in the world, can cost as much as $500 per kilogram. Since this type of potato is almost extinct, only 100 tonnes are grown each year, requiring fertilisation by seaweed.
For all you chocolate lovers, how about a $2600 per pound chocopologie chocolate? The handmade chocolate truffle contains a black truffle and 70 percent Valrhona cacao.
Getting past the shock of people paying extreme amounts for basic items that I pay no more than $10 for in a supermarket, I wondered what people were willing to pay for other types of foods in restaurants.
I wasn't surprised to find the amount of money people are willing to spend at restaurants for a unique recipe.
Here are some of the most expensive meals, in the world:
Containing the finest chicken, ham, hard-boiled quails' eggs and white truffles, the Essen Platinum Club Sandwich was the most expensive sandwich, costing at $200 a sandwich.
New York has claim to the most expensive omelet and dessert where, at the Le Parker Meridien restaurant, you can try a $1000 omelet that consists of 10 ounces of sevruga caviar, a whole lobster and six eggs.
And as for dessert, the Serendipity 3 restaurant in Manhattan serves a $1000 sundae that is made up of five scoops of Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream, Madagascar vanilla, 23K edible gold leaf and one of the most expensive chocolates in the world, Amedei Porceleana.
To celebrate their 75th anniversary, the PG company released the world's most expensive tea bag. Hand decorated with 280 diamonds, the bag was created to highlight the love people have for a cup of tea. The tea bags were worth a whopping $7500.
And for a staggering $540,000, you can own one of the most expensive drinks, the Diva Vodka, which is produced by the Blackwood Distillery in Scotland.
I don't think I can ever complain about the prices in the supermarkets after finding out how much money people are willing to spend for their favourite food - my little $10 packet of salmon no longer seems so expensive.
