Yesterday, my friends and I decided to go out for dinner and instead of focusing on whether to eat Asian, American, Italian or Persian cuisine, we focused on the meats.
One of my friend felt like chicken and the other felt like fish and I felt like pork. We then got into a heated discussion about which was the better meat.
I thought that there was nothing better than roast pork and a side of crackle.
To settle our dispute, we headed to the internet to fine the healthiest options, and were surprised with what we found.
Being one of the most widely consumed meats, I was surprised not to find beef in the top five meats.
Health wise, the best meat to eat is our one of Australia's icons - the kangaroo. Not only does it have less calories, but it also has less fat per serve than other meats, as well as more iron and protein.
The second best was white fish because it is low in fat but high in protein and contains iron, low cholesterol and healthy omega 3 fatty acids.
Ostrich came next, followed by chicken breast.
My pork came fifth, so I had to concede and eat at a restaurant that served chicken and fish.
However as the meals we'd ordered came out, I was hit with confusion.
Yes, chicken and fish was a healthier option than pork. however my friends had ordered greasy fish and chips and fried chicken - meals my dietitian had once told me I should try to avoid.
Just because it is chicken doesn't mean it is healthy - the dressing we pour on it or the way we cook it and whether it has its skin on or not, changes the nutritional value of chicken.
As the food came out, I looked at the food in dismay because I realised that I had been tricked into eating those two meats as they were meant to be healthier than pork - yet the meals themselves were the opposite.
I guess sometimes it is better to eat at home because at least we could all have prepared our own meals, and everyone would have been happy.
