All Eaten Up

When the usual food isn't enough

When the usual food isn't enough

Having just spent a couple of days sick in bed, I've realised I have strange habits when I'm ill.

In particular, I watch period dramas, particularly those based on Jane Austen novels, really bad comedies which are so much funnier when the brain isn't working properly, and I eat mandarins and drink Kirks lemonade.

Note, it has to be Kirks lemonade. Sprite, Schweppes etc just won't do. I'm not sure why that is - a shrink would probably tell me it harkens back to my childhood or something, but I really don't remember if that's what I drank when I was a kid.

After talking to my friends about their sick-food habits, I've realised that most of them crave junk food, and those foods high in carbs when they're laid up.

It's something to do with the comfort factor, and appears to be psychological, rather than nutritious for the body.

It did make me wonder, though, what foods I should be sticking to when I'm sick and I've come up with the following:

1. Garlic - maybe not on it's own, but certainly whatever you're cooking should have a healthy does of garlic in it.

2. Oranges (or mandarins) - high in Vitamin C, it will help your immune system.

3. Soup - easy to eat when you have a sore throat, soup will also ensure you are giving your body enough fuel to sustain it while you're sick. Add a bread roll if you're hungry.

4. Water - and lots of it! It flushes out those toxins and keeps you hydrated.

5. Honey - my grandmother would give me a spoonful of honey when I had a cough, and I have to admit, it really does help.

What strange eating habits do you have when you're sick?
